I have gone for many Sunday walks along this path and so I decided to use it as one of my first experiments with landscape. I wanted to incorporate pattern within the landscape and I used yellow ochre with two shades of grey and black. I wanted the curled ferns in the foreground to look a little like goats’ horns. The figures are very stylised, but I like the way their shadows look so serene on the white path.

This is a reduction method colour linocut. It is printed from one block. Firstly I cut out the white shapes only and printed the block using yellow ink. Then I cut out the yellow shapes on the block and printed blue on top of the yellow to make green, then cut and printed another green. Then finally I cut out the green areas and printed black on top of the other three colours. With the reduction method, registration is crucial; it is vital to line up the block in exactly the same position on the paper each time I print.

I also have to decide my edition size in advance and once I have printed the edition, I can’t go back and print more because nearly all areas of the design have been cut away. This time I printed an edition of nine.

Someone recently said that the image looked good rotated through ninety degrees so that the woman is lying down – I agree.

The image was recently used on the poster of the Doddiscombsleigh Art Show. Located in the beautiful village of Doddiscombsleigh just outside Exeter, the Doddiscombsleigh Art Show is a biennial exhibition and sale of work by a selection of artists from the South West.
